NYC Public High School Student Demographics

The proportion of Black and Hispanic students in NYC public high schools are respectively 1.5 and 1.6 times higher than the national averages.



Nearly three-quarters of all NYC Public High School students are from economically disadvantaged families, and the proportion has increased by 1.5 percent for the 2019 cohort.

Students ever identified as English learners (Current ELL and Former ELL) have grown, from 13.3% in Cohort 2012 to 17.4% in Cohort 2018, then it dropped to 16.4% in Cohort 2019.

Students with disabilities have slightly increased from 17.4% among the 2012 Cohort to 19.9% among the 2019 Cohort.
